Ferdinand Magellan (above) led the first circumnavigation of the world.
Magellan was a very good good leader. He was a Portuguese man sailing for Spain. Spain was enemies with Portugal, so when Magellan was given an almost entirely Spanish crew, it was no surprise that they did not like him. Imagine having to convince 270 people that hated you to sail around the world on a three year journey. It would be hard, but Magellan managed to almost lead his crew the entire way. If Magellan haden't been killed than he might have circumnavigated the world, found The Spice Islands, and made back to Spain, and that takes good leadership.
Magellan, as an explorer, was in a position where he was required to be a leader. Unfortunatly for Magellan, he was also not a very good leader. Magellan started out with five ships, the Trinidad, the Santiago, the Victoria, the San Antonio, and the Conception and 270 crew members, but due to his poor leadership, only 18 men and one ship (the Victoria) returned from the three year voyage. His leadership was so bad that at one point his entire crew rebelled against him. The crew of the San Antonio became so outraged with Magellan's leadership that they turned back and left Magellan's fleet at the Strait of Magellan. Another point when Magellan's leadership was questionable was when he landed in the Philippines. He made peace with one tribe of natives, but that tribe was at war with a tribe from another island. Magellan, being very religious and overconfident, agreed to fight the other tribe with only 60 men, none of which had previous battle training. This, of course, resulted in Magellan and most of the 60 men being killed. That is why Ferdinand Magellan was both a good and bad leader.
